IF Arsenal want to return to the top four, they have to sort out their defence and Dayot Upamecano can be the answer to Arsenal’s defensive woes.
Unai Emery did make getting defenders his summer priority by signing David Luiz, Kieran Tierney and William Saliba – although the latter was loaned out to Saint Eienne as he undergoes further development. But Arsenal’s concern at the back remain yet to be resolved.
Prior to signing David Luiz, Upamecano was firmly on the Gunners’ radar as a possible replacement for Laurent Koscielny in the summer. Though RB Leipzig rejected a sizable £50million offer who were said to be holding out for a fee close to the defender’s release clause of £82m.
However, the Frenchman has not signed a new deal with the Bundesliga and his contract expires at the end of next season. With German club worried of losing him for nothing in just over 18 months, Leipzig are now preparing themselves to accept a lower offer.
The Gunners are expected to make their move either in January or well, be the summer – but Upamecano looks firmly like someone they would like to have.
