Arsenal are reportedly eyeing a move for midfielder Martin Zubimendi. The 25-year-old, a standout player for Real Sociedad in La Liga, has also represented Spain on the international stage.
While most of Mikel Arteta’s starting XI is secure, there are a few areas he aims to strengthen. The Gunners are targeting a forward, a midfielder, and possibly a left-back. With Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice solidified in the midfield, Zubimendi would complement them well, forming a balanced midfield trio.
The Spaniard would fit seamlessly into the holding midfielder role, allowing Odegaard to assume the playmaker position and Rice to function as a box-to-box midfielder.
Zubimendi has been compared to Barcelona legend Sergio Busquets. He is composed on the ball and excels at creating space with clever maneuvers while receiving passes. He typically likes to drop deep to dictate play but is also capable of advancing the ball with his dribbling skills.
While Zubimendi’s technical abilities are well-regarded, his mental attributes are particularly impressive. He demonstrates a high understanding of the game with his vision and decision-making. Given Arteta‘s emphasis on building from the back, the Spaniard would be an ideal fit for that role.
Zubimendi reportedly has a €60 million release clause in his contract, but convincing him to move to North London may prove challenging. Journalist Fabrizio Romano has noted the midfielder’s reluctance to leave Spain.
“We keep hearing a lot of stories about Martin Zubimendi, who has been linked several times mostly with Arsenal and Barcelona, while some outlets are now stating that he is unlikely to leave Real Sociedad as he is happy and settled in his hometown and not looking to leave the Basque region,” Romano said.
While securing Zubimendi’s signature would be a difficult task, his addition would significantly benefit the team. The Gunners should go all out to sign the midfielder.
