Arsenal held talks to sign 18-year-old Santos prodigy wanted by European heavyweights

JP-Chermont-Arsenal

Arsenal have held talks to sign Santos right-back JP Chermont, who is a key target for a host of European clubs this year.

The 18-year-old star has passed through the ranks at the Brazilian club’s academy and has been with them since his U13 days. He made his first senior debut this year and has scored two goals and provided four assists in over 36 appearances for the Alvinegro.

Unfortunately, Santos were relegated from the Brasileiro Serie A and are open to receiving offers for the £58 million star. Their bleak financial status will attract cash-rich clubs in their pursuit of their prized asset.

Arsenal, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Everton, Chelsea, and even Spanish giants Barcelona and Real Madrid are keeping close tabs on the defensive prodigy.

Arsenal preparing JP Chermont bid

As per CaughtOffside, Arsenal and Chelsea are ready to table a bid with both sides having conversation with the Chermont’s entourage. The player has been scouted several times by top English clubs, and they are convinced that he is a player worth investing in.

The question would be who he would choose between the two English elites. Arsenal have a better project right now and is a perfect environment for raw talents to blossom. There will be intense competition for places, but if he is talented enough, he will fix his spot in the future.

The Gunners have several options in the right back position, with Ben White, Jurrien Timber, and Takehiro Tomiyasu all fighting for their place in the main squad. Nevertheless, signing Chermont is a smart move since he can be a clever future investment.

Meanwhile, Chelsea are struggling with their long-term plans; although they did snap up an insane number of youngsters, the results are yet to come. But Chermont might view it as a good opportunity since the Blues never shy away from giving chances to young players.

He will find it easy to bag regular first-team football at Stamford Bridge. They are in need of a right-back to fill the slot left by the injury-prone Reece James. They are fond of Brazilian talents and recently roped in Andrey Santos and Estevao Willian.

The Gunners have also enjoyed exploiting the South American transfer market. They made some shrewd business by getting Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Magalhaes.

Learning at one of the world’s best and most prestigious Hale End institutions is a chance too good to turn down.
