Barcelona could allow Ronald Araujo to depart the club amid transfer interest from Arsenal and Juventus as the Uruguayan’s place in the squad continues to diminish. As per reports from Daily Cannon, Araujo has been disappointed as Pau Cubarsi and Inigo Martinez have forged a partnership in central defense, resulting in him being left out at their expense.
As a result, the 25-year-old Uruguayan could be on the lookout for the next move that he could make, with contract talks also reportedly stalling with the Catalan giants. Barcelona are also in the market for Bayer Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah, whose contract with the German side expires this summer. They will look to sign Tah on a free transfer, which has further raised doubts in Araujo’s mind about his importance to the team.
Araujo’s current deal with Barca expires in June 2026, meaning he still has one-and-a-half more years with the club. There have been talks of a potential extension since 2024 but with no movement on that front, it appears that the club are now willing to offload the player permanently.
Ronald Araujo – journey so far
Ronald Araujo was born in Rivera, Uruguay in 1999 and joined the youth team of his local club Huracan de Rivera in 2012. He stayed with them before moving to Rentistas in 2015, where he played for a year in the youth setup before being promoted to the first team in 2016. He was initially a forward in his early days, even scoring seven goals in 17 appearances for Rentistas.
However, he also made the big switch from being an attacker to becoming a defender while at the club, which would shape the next few years of his career. He then played for Boston River between 2017-18, before joining Barcelona in 2018 for a fee of about €5 million, including add-ons.
Araujo played 44 games for Barcelona Athletic, scoring six goals and providing three assists, before being moved up to the main team. For them, he has made 151 appearances, scoring eight goals and providing six assists.
While neither party would want to part ways, it seems that a move away from Barcelona is just what Araujo could need.
