Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone has responded to growing reports linking striker Julian Alvarez with a summer move to Arsenal, saying he fully understands why top clubs are circling but insists the Argentine forward is going nowhere.
Alvarez has been one of the standout performers in La Liga this season, scoring 29 goals in all competitions, including seven in the Champions League, under Simeone’s guidance. Arsenal, who have been searching for an elite centre-forward, are among the clubs said to be most interested, especially with sporting director Andrea Berta the man who brought Alvarez to Atleti now pulling strings at the Emirates.
But speaking at a press conference over the weekend, Simeone was quick to play down any chances of losing his star striker.
“It’s logical. I can’t imagine it any other way,” said Simeone. “Of course every top club wants him: Barcelona, PSG, Arsenal, Liverpool… all of them. And for us, for Atlético fans, it should be a point of pride that everyone wants him. Because he’s ours. And since he’s ours, we need to protect him.”
“He is 25 years old, an extraordinary player—hungry, humble, hardworking, a goal-scorer, and full of class.”
Arsenal’s longstanding striker search
Arsenal have been monitoring several top-tier strikers ahead of the summer window, including Viktor Gyokeres, Benjamin Sesko, and Alexander Isak. Julian Alvarez, however, presents a compelling mix of pedigree, experience, and tactical fit.
Alvarez previously played under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City before making a €75 million move to Atletico Madrid in 2024—plus an additional €20m in add-ons. With Premier League experience under his belt and a goal-laden season in Spain, he ticks every box for Mikel Arteta’s project.
Arsenal’s advantage? Andrea Berta
The one edge Arsenal may have is the presence of Andrea Berta, who brought Alvarez to Atletico during his tenure as sporting director. With that connection, and a clearly defined project under Arteta, the Gunners could present the most attractive sporting proposal—if Alvarez were open to a move.
But based on Simeone’s words, Atleti have no intention of selling. With a squad being built around the Argentine, and Champions League football secured again, the ball may be in Alvarez’s court.
Author opinion
Arsenal’s interest is logical. Julian Alvarez would instantly elevate the Gunners’ attack and bring much-needed finishing quality. But with Diego Simeone standing firm and the player seemingly content in Madrid, this could be one of the trickier negotiations of the summer.
Still, in football—as in the transfer market—relationships matter. If anyone can convince Alvarez to join Arsenal, it’s likely the man who signed him once before.
