Arsenal remain locked in negotiations with Sporting CP over a deal for Viktor Gyökeres, according to a fresh update from Record Portugal. Despite both sides now being just €2.5 million apart in their valuations, no agreement has been reached yet and time is ticking.

The Gunners have long identified the Swedish striker as their priority centre-forward target for the summer window, and discussions have progressed significantly in recent days. Arsenal are believed to have tabled a formal bid worth €63.5m with €10m in add-ons where half of those add-ons are easy while Sporting continue to insist on having atleast 75% of the add-ons easily attainable.

Mikel Arteta is pushing for the striker to be part of Arsenal’s pre-season tour despite the squad already flying to Asia. As a result, there is mounting internal pressure to finalise the deal in the next few days especially with key fixtures coming early in the new season, including against Manchester United and Liverpool.

Gyökeres, who scored 43 goals in all competitions for Sporting last season, has already informed his camp that Arsenal is his preferred destination. He is said to be frustrated that Sporting are dragging their feet, especially given a prior gentleman’s agreement made between his agent and former sporting director Hugo Viana, who has since left the club.

While a gap of €2.5 million may seem small for a deal of this magnitude, both clubs are holding firm on their valuations. Arsenal are wary of setting a precedent by meeting the full release clause, while Sporting feel they are under no pressure to sell with their top scorer under a long-term contract.

For now, the deal remains alive but patience is beginning to run thin in North London.
