Arsenal appear to have won the race for Piero Hincapie, agreeing a deal in principle with Bayer Leverkusen worth £42 million. Personal terms have reportedly been in place for hours, with the Ecuadorian defender keen on making the move to North London. The transfer isn’t over the line yet, but Arsenal are now firmly in the driver’s seat ahead of Chelsea, Liverpool and Spurs.

According to Footy2SA’s latest reports, Arsenal have agreed terms in principle with Leverkusen for Hincapie’s transfer. The 23-year-old is said to favour the Gunners, giving Arsenal a clear edge in a heated chase. While rivals were interested, Hincapie’s preference and the agreement in place put Arsenal ahead.

Deal hinges on departures

A move for Hincapie will depend on outgoing transfers. Arsenal need to free up both squad space and funds, and that likely means one or more exits. Names mentioned include Jakub Kiwior, Zinchenko, Fabio Vieira, Reiss Nelson and Sambi Lokonga. A successful sale (or two) would pave the way to complete the deal.

Why Hincapie fits the mould

Hincapie offers left-footed solidity in defense and versatility to operate as left-sided CB or a full back. His profile suits Mikel Arteta’s style perfectly strong on the ball, comfortable stepping into midfield, and technically mature. If he joins, he’ll slot right into Arsenal’s pressing and building patterns.

As the window edges closer to closing, Arsenal look set to conclude this deal. Once confirmed, Hincapie would be the latest example of the club’s aggressive recruitment and strategic defensive reinforcement for a title push.
