Arsenal booked their place in the Champions League quarter-finals with a controlled 2-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen, but the headline moments only tell part of the story.

Goals from Eberechi Eze and Declan Rice decided the tie, yet several quieter details shaped how the game unfolded.

Beyond the standout strikes and dominant scoreline, there were subtle tactical shifts, individual decisions, and small moments that most fans may have missed.

Eberechi Eze Champions League goal vs Bayer Leverkusen shows that chaos is as important as control

That sweet sweet strike from Eze will dominate the highlights, but what led to it is just as important.

The move did not come from a structured attacking pattern. Instead, it came from chaos, something Arsenal do not always rely on.

Leverkusen had done well to limit central progression, forcing Arsenal into less dangerous areas. But when the ball broke loose outside the box, Eze reacted instantly. His decision to hit the shot early, rather than recycle possession, caught the defence completely off guard.

It is a small detail, but it shows trust in instinct over structure. Especially when it comes to tight knockout games, that split-second decision-making can define everything.

While that Eze goal still plays in my mind, Rice also had a precise one. But this one also did not come from a sequence of passes but from control of second balls. The initial set-piece was not dangerous, and Leverkusen had multiple chances to clear (which they didn’t do).

What stood out was Arsenal’s positioning outside the box as Rice held his ground while others pressed forward, anticipating a loose clearance. When it came, he was already set.

While most fans focus on the finish, but the positioning before the shot is what made it possible.

More rhythm needed if Arsenal are to tactically control games?

There was a period late in the game when Arsenal lost rhythm after multiple substitutions. It gave Bayer Leverkusen brief encouragement, something that could have shifted momentum.

However, Arsenal managed that phase with maturity. Instead of forcing attacks, they slowed the tempo and relied on defensive structure. This is where experience showed.

The key moment came from David Raya, whose sharp save preserved the clean sheet. But ideally Arsenal don’t have to give away situations that allow such shots to be shot.
