Coming into the season, everybody was talking about Liverpool scouting elsewhere to find someone partner Virgil Van Dijk at the heart of defence. Although they have found a perfect duo in Joe Gomez and Van Dijk this season.
Liverpool signed Joe Gomez for £3.5 million from Charlton back in 2015 and has been an absolute revelation for Liverpool this season. It seems that he has got his injury vows in the past and perhaps, has been one of the most influential performer for Liverpool this season.
A sum of £3.5 million seems a bargain, even considering he his partnering £75 million Virgil Van Dijk.
But the story would have been different, way different.
As reported by The Mirror, Arsenal were the fort-runners for the signature of Joe Gomez back in April 2015. Considering Gomez was an boyhood Arsenal fan and even the relationship between Arsenal and The Addicks, Arsenal seemed a favorable destination.
Gomez caught everyone’s eye with his performances for Charlton Athletic and Liverpool were far in a tug-of-war with multiple clubs for his signatures.
Then out the blue, talkSPORT reported that Liverpool had beaten Arsenal, Manchester United and Bournemouth to Gomez’s signatures.
It will be sickening for Arsenal fans to know, ‘How close they were to landing Joe Gomez in 2015’.
It looks like Gomez has a bright future not only for Liverpool but potentially with England too, considering the performances he is putting in this season.
