Arsenal defensive midfielder Granit Xhaka intends to return to former club FC Basel in the future.
The 26-year-old defensive midfielder spent eight years at St Jakob-Park before leaving for Bundesliga club Borussia Mochengladbach.
During his four years at Borussia-Park, Xhaka’s consistent display for club and country earned him a switch to English club Arsenal in 2016. With the Gunners now finally getting to see the best of the Swiss international in his third season, Xhaka admitted he wants to head back to play for his former club in the foreseeable future.
Asked if he is hoping to play for Basel again, he told Basellandschaftliche Zeitung (via Sport Witness):
‘Definitely! My career started here and there it is a goal, actually, my dream to return someday.
‘That certainly won’t be the case at 28, I’ll be honest. It’ll probably be more like Alex Frei, who’s the best example of how to do it.
‘He came back once he was in his thirties, but still performed and helped FCB win a few titles.
‘Of course, the expectations are high when you come back again, but it is clearly a dream.’
