Arsenal reportedly are going to get their midfielder of team Invincible back at Emirates but in a different role altogether.
The 40-year old is expected to come back in London as the football director.
Edu Gaspar presently works as national team coordinator of Brazil and will leave the same in July.
Edu will handle his last term for Brazil at the Copa America. The Brazilian international who had an enduring 13 year footballing career for Corinthians, Arsenal and Valencia retired in the year 2010.
For Arsenal, he played under Wenger from 2001 to 2005. Featuring in a total of 79 appearances for the Gunners, Gaspar could score only 7 goals but was an integral part of the Invincible squad of 2003-04 that did not lose a single game.
The former midfielder who has been the coordinator of Selecao since 2016 is now being viewed as the director of Arsenal because of various reasons, one being his footballing knowledge. The player whose career was ravaged with injury has had a drastic turnaround in his career as a director.
While at Corinthians, Edu had brought laurels for the club, winning Copa Liberatadores which is equal to Champions League of South America. The 40- year old has magnanimous reputation at Selecao too, with the Brazilians being favourite to win Copa America of this season.
There are reports that the sporting director has already signed a 5-year-deal with Arsenal and will join from Brazil after concluding his tenure on July 7.
The lookout for a technical director had always been up for the grabs, since the day Arsene Wenger left the throne. Now, with Edu finding a way in, it seems that the story of “Finding a Burgeoning Director” is finished.
