A fortnight ago, Welbeck’s envelope of exit was sealed. The forward is set to leave Arsenal, come his expiration of the contract, probably to Newcastle United. Break-up’s are horrible and to see Welbeck leave was too but the right time had arrived.
Injuries are the bane of a professional’s career where the session of injury can bring the footballer from riches to rags. And in a professional club like Arsenal the long-term injuries are not supposed to be welcomed. Certainly, though, Welbeck had fallen in the wrong side where an injury ravaged career made him bid farewell to Gunners. The process of building a squad scraps out injured players.
Danny Welbeck did rarely perform under Unai Emery. The striker was on the wrong side of injury coin just like other talented guys of Arsenal, Jack Wilshere, Abou Diaby or even Santi Cazorla. Welbeck could only feature in 14 games this season after bedding in to an ankle injury in November.
The versatile forward who joined Gunners in 2014 from Manchester United only made 88 appearances for the Gunners and scored a meagre 16 goals. The injury that was laden by career, Welbeck flirted more with knee injuries than football. Apart from his nasty one this November, from September 2015 and January 2017 where he had to miss a total of 59 matches and 392 days of football. One caused him a surgery another major cartilage damage.
The English international had a few moments to look back with Arsenal. Only a few. One of those being his match winning goal against his former club Manchester United in the quarter-final of FA CUP 2015. He was also a constructive figure in Arsenal’s FA Cup final 2-1 win over Chelsea. That’s it then, he started featuring in injuries, that too in succession.
Thought of a third-choice centre forward, Welbeck could not fulfil this position too. It seems to be unnecessary role but is an extremely useful one. This certainly has made Unai Emery find a replacement for Welbeck. May 5 2019, luckily though, Welbeck made his last Gunner jersey performance against Brighton. That’s it then! End of a story whose genre is – INJURY.
