Arsenal eye 22-year-old Boca Juniors keeper who stopped a record four penalties in one game

Arsenal’s search for a new backup goalkeeper has not stopped since Aaron Ramsdale left the Emirates Stadium this summer.

The English giants wanted a reliable player in front of the nets, and director Edu was a fan of Joan Garcia from Espanyol. However, both clubs were unable to meet on common grounds due to the shot-stopper’s asking price.

In the end, they managed to rope in Bournemouth star Neto on loan. But the new backup signing is cup-tied, which has forced Mikel Arteta to introduce academy talents Tommy Setford and Jack Porter in other domestic competitions.

Hence, registering a reliable and long-term target is a must. We don’t see Neto staying beyond this season, and new transfer rumours are expected to resurface.

As reported by Boca Nortiicas, Arsenal are closely following Boca Juniors goalkeeper Leandro Brey ahead of the January transfer window.

The 22-year-old saved four out of five penalties in the recent Copa Argentina competition, helping his side reach the semifinals. He is widely known as the ‘new penalty king’ of Argentina, second to world-cup winner Emiliano Martinez.

Brey is enjoying his time at the Bombonera and has established himself as their undisputed No. 1, displacing top keeper Sergio Romero in the club’s pecking order.

Boca president Juan Roman Riquelme rates the South American talent very highly, and it remains to be seen if he will be willing to let his prized asset leave mid-season. The keeper is currently happy with his role at the club, but it will be hard to resist a move to North London in 2025.

Brey will relish the opportunity to play under Mikel Arteta, a manager who is known to nurture youngsters. He can showcase his abilities at the highest level and get the chance to learn from some of the world’s finest players.

The Gunners have a financial advantage since the Boca star won’t cost a load of money. The fans must keep a watch on this transfer cover as the Premier League outfit navigates itself through some twists and turns in the upcoming months.
