According to the latest reports, Premier League giants Arsenal has reportedly joined the race to sign Ajax central defender Matthijs De Ligt in the summer transfer window.
The Gunners are keen to improve their defensive line and the arrival of De Ligt would significantly improve Unai Emery’s rather leaky back line.
Ever since taking over as manager of Arsenal football club in the summer, Emery has done quite an admirable job at the Emirates. At the moment, Arsenal sits in fifth place on the Premier League table and are well in the hunt to finish in the top 4 to qualify for Champions League football next season.
However, one major area of concern for Arsenal faithful remains at the heart of the defense. The North Londoners have already conceded 37 goals in the league and have to find a way of stitching up that department.
Most Arsenal fans would be happy to know that their club is now looking to sign Dutch defender Matthijs De Ligt when the summer transfer window opens up. But the issue is that there are plenty of top clubs in the European continent who are monitoring the young teenager.
De Ligt is breaking records for club and country and recently became the youngest player to get 10 senior caps for the Netherlands. He also became the youngest player to captain a Champions League side when Ajax took on Real Madrid last week.
De Ligt is considered as one of the top wonder-kids in Europe and even La Liga champions Barcelona are keen on signing the 19-year-old highly rated centre-back. The news outlet, The Sun reports that Arsenal is now joining the race to sign the £75 million-rated superstar from the Eredivisie outfit as Manchester City are also in the hunt.
But the report also states that Arsenal can only make a move for De Ligt if they qualify for Champions League football and cut down on Mesut Ozil’s staggering £350,000 a week wage deal.
