There have been talks about signing yet another defender since securing Sokratis Papastathopoulos from Borussia Dortmund in the summer. In fact, its one of the highly debated things among the Gooners – many believe we already have enough of centre backs to sign more whereas many want immediate quality integrated into the squad.
With January coming soon and cry for a defender growing by a part of fans has kept various talented defenders linked with Arsenal on the papers.
To be honest, Arsenal do need a defender ‘on temporary basis, if not permanent’. With injury to Rob Holding, who is believed to be out of the season, and with Laurent Koscielny and Konstantinos Mavropanos yet to appear this season – we do need someone.
If the reports in Spain are to be believed, Arsenal are targeting Real Valladolid centre-back Fernando Calero.
Fernando Calero, only made his professional debut about a year back but his performances for the Pucela’s have attracted interest from clubs in La Liga, as well as across Europe.
Cadena SER writes that Fernando Calero has given his word to Valladolid that he won’t bid adieu in the winter and will only consider a move away if his buyout clause is activated. He could be available for a price of only €11 million (£10m), which is his release clause in his contract with Valladolid, which is relatively cheap for the player of his quality considering the big cheque transfer window of the modern era.
When donning the Real Valladolid badge this season, Fernando Calero has only conceded 15 goals for as many games as he have featured in, which serves an impressive record and clearly shows the impact he has had.
Arsenal face notable competition from Seville and Borussia Dortmund.
