Riding high until first half of the season, Arsenal have experienced a downturn after the start of January. This time along, Gunners had a run of purple patch with 22 unbeaten games before being succumbed to Southampton 3-2. The Gunners experienced their worst defeat against mighty Reds of Merseyside club losing to them 5-1.

Following the defeat from Southampton – Arsenal have only managed to win 2 of their last six games, which dictates the coming of a downfall. The Gunners have donned the fan as bad as they have exposed their defence.

The defence of Emery’s side looked both mentally and physically tired against Red’s dominance, pace and power. They totally looked a whole different side that had been playing until October end. The defensive woes need to be blinded if Arsenal fancy their chance to play biggest football competition, Champions League.

Emery’s concern are only growing with consistent injury to his defenders. Many claim, that it is his hard working practice before the games that is also a reason for a number of injuries. The Spaniard has already made 7 changes in the centre-half position, with the absence of Koscielny proving a big factor.

A lack of clean sheets testimonies Arsenal’s woes. The Gunners are third from bottom in keeping clean sheets, with only Fulham and Manchester United above them. The injuries to his defenders may however, be a reason for the failure. With his three important Monreal, Koscielny and Lichtsteiner ageing 33, 34 and 35 respectively, have a little left in their career, Arsenal have a lot of home work to do.

Arsenal tried to solve the problems they faced under Wenger by bringing in Sokratis Papastathopoulos but the veteran has not succeed as much as expected of him, and they need someone who would take charge in the centre.

Where other big giants possess quality centre-backs, Arsenal lack someone as dependable as Virgil Van Dijk of Liverpool. Emery does need to get in an experienced name in the heart of their defence either now or in the summer, but SOON!
