Arsenal are reportedly set to profit from the sale of former player Mark McGuinness due to a sell-on clause included in his contract.

McGuinness is close to finalizing a move to Luton Town from Cardiff City in a deal that could be worth up to £10 million. When the 23-year-old left North London for Wales in 2021, Arsenal inserted a sell-on clause of 20%-25%. Should the proposed transfer be completed, the Gunners could earn around £2.5 million if all add-on targets are met.

The centre-back, who came through Arsenal’s youth ranks, never made a senior appearance for the club. However, he did have a productive loan spell with Ipswich Town in League One during the 2020-21 season. His impressive performances led to a permanent move to Championship club Cardiff City. Over three seasons in Wales, McGuinness made 85 appearances for Cardiff, scoring five goals.

Former Wales striker Roberts has described McGuinness as an “old-fashioned defender.”

“Mark McGuinness is a throwback if you ask me. He is an old-fashioned defender – he enjoys defending. I don’t think he’s great on the ball. His distribution isn’t brilliant – I think he’d admit that. But if you put the ball in his penalty box, he will go and win it, he will put his body on the line. That’s something you don’t see too much of in this day and age.”

“£10m for a player who, a couple of years ago, went on loan to Sheffield Wednesday and didn’t look as if he had a future at the club – it’s good business for Cardiff, and it will be a good move for Mark,” Roberts added.

Luton Town had a spirited campaign in the Premier League last season but faced relegation. The Hatters are now aiming for a swift return to the top flight, and they hope McGuinness will play a crucial role in their promotion chase. Arsenal fans can look forward to seeing their academy graduate back in the Premier League next season if McGuinness and Luton have a successful Championship campaign.
