According to reports, Premier League side Arsenal are keen on landing Andre Onana from Ajax on a free transfer in the summer of 2022. The Ghanaian shot-stopper will reportedly leave the Eredivisie giants once his contract expires and has no intention of signing an extension.
Onana has been on Arsenal’s transfer wishlist for quite some time now but a move to North London never really materialized. He recently returned to action for the club following a lengthy ban which saw him ruled out due to doping regulations.
Despite his recent return, the 25-year-old wants to move away from Ajax amid interest from the Premier League. Arsenal are now in a prime position to bring Onana to England after being heavily linked with the goalkeeper for the past few seasons.
Arsenal will also get an additional boost in pursuit of signing Onana as Marc Overmars is currently the Director of Football at Ajax. Overmars spent three years as a player at Arsenal after leaving Ajax in 1997.
The 48-year-old confirmed that Ajax will be willing to sell Onana in January to cut their losses rather than lose him for free in the summer.
While there is no urgent need for Arsenal to sign a goalkeeper at the moment, given Aaron Ramsdale’s impressive start to life at the club, they might need a backup shot-stopper if Bernd Leno opts to leave the club.
The German has lost his starting berth between the posts to Ramsdale since the Englishman arrived at Arsenal this season. Reports claim that Leno is now unhappy at the club and wants to move elsewhere if he cannot nail down the No.1 spot as Arsenal goalkeeper.
This is where Onana could play a part. Also, Lacazette.
Multiple sources have revealed that Alexandre Lacazette will be leaving Arsenal in January as the player’s contract expires in the summer. The Frenchman has garnered interest from Sevilla and Inter Milan but Arsenal might possibly think of using Lacazette to strike a deal with Ajax.
As both clubs have players they need to offload before losing them for free, reports claim that a swap deal could be on the cards in the January transfer window.
