Arsenal have drawn Portuguese side Sporting CP in the Europa League round of sixteen.
Following the impressive group stage performances [topping the table despite losing to PSV with 15 points of maximum ceiling of eighteen], the Gunners were rewarded with sitting out the nasty play-offs where you’d have to face the Champions League group drop-outs in a knock-off run of fixtures (home & away).
This is not the first time Arsenal have drawn Sporting Lisbon in European competition. The Gunners have faced the Portuguese giants twice before – once getting better of them on a 3-0 on aggregate in the 1969 Fairs Cup and more recently in 2018/19 in the Europa League group stage where we got the better of Lisbon in Jose Alvaladi Stadium, thanks to a goal from Danny Welbeck and that was followed by a bleak draw (0-0) at the Emirates Stadium.
Arsenal will travel to Jose Alvaladi Stadium, Lisbon on March 9th for the first leg and that’d be followed by one at the Emirates a week later.
