Hale End gem to be shipped off as Arsenal makes shocking decision

Charlie-Patino

As revealed by Ryan Taylor on X, Arsenal have agreed a deal to sell midfielder Charlie Patino to Spanish outfit Deportivo La Coruna on a permanent deal for a fee in the region of £1 million.

The Gunners have also inserted an important sell-on clause in the contract, with the deal having moved into the advanced stages and might be over the line soon.

Club’s sporting director Edu is becoming an ace in the sell-on space with his recent deals like Hutchinson, Guendouzi, and others.

Going into the details of the deal: The sell-on clause is 33%. Mikel Arteta’s side initially wanted £8 million, but the player turned down multiple offers along the range in June/July. Frustrating to receive such a low fee for a bright prospect. He also turned down a new contract at his present club, per the ever-reliable Arsenal Fanatics on their Pateron.

Hence, he forced Arsenal’s hands into a sale. The North London side has curated a similar deal with Eddie Nketiah this week as they close in on a potential agreement with Nottingham Forest worth around £30m with a potential 15% sell-on clause in the agreement.

Patino had set his sights on a move to La Coruna since his dad played for the Segunda Division side. As a kid, he used to watch Depor matches. Speaking about the potential transfer in 2023, he said: “My dad supports Deportivo La Coruna because he grew up in Spain. Maybe one day I could play for them too.”

The midfielder joined the North London outfit in 2015 from Leeds United but had limited opportunities within the team. He couldn’t get a breakthrough even after performing well while on loan at Championship clubs Swansea City and Blackpool.

The English star played two senior games for Arsenal, with the latest coming in 2021 against Sunderland. He was impressive as he scored on his debut. But he wasn’t given any more chances to feature, and it was logical for him to explore a move. Patino was not a part of the preseason squad that travelled to the United States this summer.

The authority wanted to sell him last summer, but they didn’t receive any concrete offers. Hence, they extended his contract for one more year to protect his value.

Patino was expected to be the next big Hale Ender, but things didn’t work out for the talented youngster. He might prove us wrong by having a similar influence as Serge Gnabry had after he left for Bayern Munich.

The 20-year-old’s technical abilities are better suited to Spanish football. He carries the ball well, can pass between the lines, has sharp movements, and displays great defensive value (a similar style to Martin Ødegaard).

He will get more chances at the Raizor Stadium and can help the Depors achieve promotion to the La Liga. Meanwhile, the Gunners hope that he shines and they get a hefty profit in the future.
