It’s fair to say Arsenal are relying on their attack to win matches. And that’s justified as well. After all Arsenal have Aubameyang, Lacazette, Ozil, Mkhitaryan and Iwobi to make things work for them. This is backed by the energetic midfield trio of Aaron Ramsey, Lucas Torreira and Mattéo Guendouzi. Ever Arsenal’s full back are more of an attacking threat with Bellerin and Monreal continuously strive in final third. But as they say ‘good attack wins you matches, good defence wins you trophies.’
Arsenal’s defensive record has been poor. Last season they conceded 50 goals in the league and this time around, it’s the reason why they sit 5th even after a record breaking unbeaten run. Arsenal have let in more goals than wolves and Everton and with such a leaky defence, it’s fair to say arsenal can only by entertainers and not challengers.
Even luck hasn’t favoured them. Koscielny just came back from a long term injury and isn’t yet in a position to guard the team. Nacho Monreal also had his issues. Mustafi has a thigh problem and Sokratis poor disciplinary record is something to worry. But above all it’s Rob Holding’s long term injury which has prompted Unai Emery to recruit in January.
And up comes Fernando Calero. The 23 year old Spaniard is a late bloomer, having made his first team debut last season. But having been given the chance, Calero cemented his place in Real Valladolid’s starting XI.
Calero is a part of defence that has conceded 15 goals so far in the league. The stats doesn’t look extraordinary but given the fact that Valladolid were odds on for relegation, this looks impressive.
Calero has drawn attention from Dortmund, Sevilla and Arsenal. But Arsenal won’t find it hard to lure him at Emirates. With Holding out for atleast 6 months, Gunners look set to splash around £10 million for his replacement, Calero.
