Former Arsenal superstar Emmanuel Petit recently spoke about his intake on ‘Mesut Ozil’s current situation’, he thinks Mesut Ozil has lost his psychological edge and is wasting his talents by not playing regularly for Arsenal.
Arsenal under Unai Emery are currently in a strange place as their talismanic playmaker Mesut Ozil is still nowhere to be seen in the squad. Ozil is still training and seems fit enough to play but Spanish manager Unai Emery has revealed on multiple occasions that the midfielder is not in his squad due to tactical reasons.
Ozil had not played a single minute of football in 2019 with his last appearance coming back on Boxing Day in a 1-1 draw with Brighton & Hove Albion before he led Cardiff City at The Emirates in late January.
The 30-year-old is on contract with the club until 2021 and is on a staggering wage rate of £350,000 a week deal.
But recent rumors have reported that Ozil could be on his way out of North London in the summer which has infuriated Arsenal fans. The World Cup winner with Germany also quit playing for his national side last year in quite controversial manner.
However, Arsenal club legend Emmanuel Petit believes that Ozil’s problem is mainly a psychological one. While speaking to the Daily Mail, the Frenchman said, “It is very frustrating. I cannot remember the last time he was an artist on the pitch; now when he asks questions we already know the answers. He is a wasted talent, he has a terrible psychological problem.”
Petit went on to explain his own situation as an example, “In 2002, when the French team went out [of the World Cup] as champions, it was shameful, not just that we lost it but the way we lost it. It is the same as Germany in 2018. Ozil was seen as one of the most responsible for that because of his body language on the pitch.
But it was already the case for Ozil for the last two years for Arsenal – one great game, four average ones. Mentally he is not there anymore. Physically he is in good shape, he has talent, we all know his quality, but if you cannot work your brain to be the beautiful player we know you can be, it’s over. “
