Ozil Starts. Ozil Scores. That was the story of Arsenal’s 5-1 win against Bournemouth yesterday, where Mesut Ozil impressed everyone on his return to starting line-up at The Emirates, scoring one and assisting another, and Arsenal legend Ian Wright has spotted something about his finishing.
World Cup winner with Germany gave Arsenal an early lead with a well struck left foot strike which saw the ball bouncing over the keeper (Arthur Boruc).
And on a closer look it seems his technique is deliberate rather than just some fluke, which can get any keeper confused and admittingly doing what Mesut exactly wants them to.
Ozil has had an uneven relationship with Unai Emery, but his recent performances are finding himself a way back into Unai’s good books and showcasing EXACTLY WHY Arsenal are paying those staggering £350,000 a week.
Cherries was just another Mesut classic days where he brilliantly scored Arsenal’s first and setting up Henrikh Mkhitaryan his goal just four minutes after the first bow.
Speaking on Match of the Day after the game, Wright, who was Arsenal’s top scorer until Thierry Henry overtook him, praised Ozil’s ball striking technique.
“You’ve noticed something about Ozil’s finishing,” host Gary Lineker said.
“He kicks down on to the ball. He bounces it on purpose,” Wright replied.
“He did it against Huddersfield and he kicked down on to it against Bournemouth.
“Instead of chipping it over a keeper he bounces it over him.
“You can see him telling everyone what he did [while celebrating].
“It’s just such a brave finish for someone to do, it’s brilliant. It’s the Ozil.”
The win keeps Arsenal in their fourth spot with one point above Manchester United and three above Chelsea with the Stamford Bridge side having one game in hand.
Arch-rivals Tottenham, who sit in third place, were beaten by Chelsea and if Arsenal win against Spurs on Saturday – they could just be a point a drift of third spot.
Mesut’s recent performances will give Emery some scratch of head over choosing his starting eleven against Tottenham, although for me Ozil has done enough to get himself starting at Wembley.
