Should Arsenal hand Leandro Trossard a new contract this season?

Arsenal are pushing to lock in Leandro Trossard with a new contract at N5.

Arsenal have opened talks with Leandro Trossard and his camp over a contract renewal to keep the Belgian at the Emirates Stadium. This is as per Football Insider, who have reported that the Gunners are looking to extend the 29-year-old’s existing deal.

Saudi Arabian clubs showed interest in acquiring Trossard’s services during the summer transfer window, which seems to be one of the Gunners’ primary reasons behind the contract decision. The report adds that Al-Ittihad from the Saudi Pro League made a last-ditch £30 million bid to sign Trossard on deadline day but Arsenal rejected it.

Fellow Premier League side West Ham United have also registered their interest in the player in recent times but Trossard remains a key part of Mikel Arteta’s plans. However, if the player agrees to an extension now, his transfer value will also increase for any possible future sale.

Is Arsenal making the right move by extending Trossard contract?

Leandro Trossard joined Arsenal from Brighton & Hove Albion in January 2023 and has established himself as a key player in Arteta’s side. Earlier used predominantly as an impact substitute, Trossard has now become a regular starter and regularly chips in with goals.

The Belgian forward has made 83 appearances for the Gunners, scoring 20 goals and providing 13 assists. While his impact on the team’s chances of winning has mostly been positive, age is not his side as he is nearing 30.

Should Arsenal receive a decent enough offer for their player, a longer contract will give them the negotiating power to ask for a larger fee. This seems like a good move considering the interest from Saudi and the fact that the SPL clubs are likely to pay more than their European counterparts.

However, this also works out in present-day as Trossard remains a key member of the first team squad.
