After starting his football career at I.A. 18 de Julio of Fray Bentos in Uruguay, Lucas Torreira soon moved to youth team of Montevideo Wanderers’. He decided to go to Italy and join the youth team of Pescara 2013. He was called up for the first team of Pescara ahead of 2014-15 season.
Lucas Torreira was on the bench for Pescara first time on 25th October in 2014. He made his Series B debut starting against Varese. Lucas Torreira had made five appearances following his debut for Pescara including the promotion playoff in 2014-15 season.
Lucas Torreira moved to Sampdoria for transfer fee around £1.5 million next season. But Pescara continued to recieve his services as he returned to his boyhood club immediately after sealing Sampdoria switch in order to gain first team experience. Lucas Torreira got his first goal for Pescara against FC Sudtirol in Coppa Italia that season. The Uruguayan midfielder made 34 appearances in all competitions for Pescara scoring 6 goals.
Making His Mark :
Following his commendable performances for Pescara, Lucas Torreira joined Sampdoria at the beginning of 2016-17 season. He had made his debut for Sampdoria in the opening match of the season against Empoli. Lucas Torreira was regular starter for Sampdoria in 2016-17 season.
The Uruguayan midfielder made 36 appearances that season scoring 4 goals including the one against Juventus in their 3-2 triumph over Serie A Champions.
After his consistent good performance with Sampdoria in Serie A, Lucas Torreira was called up for the Uruguayan National side in the China Cup. Torreira made his debut for Uruguay against Czech Republic in the Semifinal of the China Cup.
He was also named in the provisional squad of Uruguay for the World Cup in May, 2018 before eventually going to Russia with Uruguay.
During his time with ‘La Samp’ made 71 appearances, becoming a first-team regular and an integral part of the side.
World Cup 2018 – National Hero
Lucas didn’t start for Uruguay against Egypt and Saudi Arabia, but soon found himself in the starting eleven against the likes of Russia, Portugal and France. He not only proved his involvement with nationa team, but also had the whole nation backing him for his every hustles and tussles.
His antics against Portugal as well as France has got everyone talking.
Torreira literally had the better of Cristiano Ronaldo for majority of the fixture and did show signs of damage against France. He did keep the French looking for some space, leading from the center.
Becoming a Gunner :
After a strong World Cup performance, Lucas Torreira was announced as a Gunner on 7 July, 2018.
