Olympique Lyonnais have officially announced the signing of Matt Turner from Nottingham Forest. The transfer is valued at €8 million (£6.74 million). Additionally, there is an immediate loan move to MLS club New England Revolution for the 2025 season. The MLS side also has a €3 million option to buy.

Turner, 31, joined Forest from Arsenal in 2023. He struggled to secure a consistent starting role, making 21 appearances in the 2023/24 campaign. Subsequently, he lost his place to Matz Sels. A season-long loan to Crystal Palace followed. However, he featured just four times, primarily in domestic cup competitions.

Matt Turner aims for World Cup spot

Despite limited minutes at club level, Turner remains a prominent figure in the United States Men’s National Team. He has earned 52 caps and lifted the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2021. However, his starting position has recently come under pressure. NYCFC’s Matt Freese was preferred during the 2025 Gold Cup under USMNT manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Turner’s transfer to Lyon concludes a complicated situation. The deal was initially agreed under former Lyon president John Textor. However, following ownership changes and financial scrutiny, the club attempted to cancel the agreement. New owner Michele Kang proceeded with the move after legal reviews.

Nottingham Forest confirmed Matt Turner has completed a permanent transfer to Olympique Lyonnais. The USA international moved to Forest from Arsenal in August 2023. Turner played 21 times for the Reds before heading to Crystal Palace on loan.

Loan to New England Revolution confirmed

Lyon also confirmed that Turner would return to New England Revolution. He previously played there between 2018 and 2022. The MLS side will cover his salary during the loan period to ensure he gains regular playing time.

While Turner’s future at Lyon remains uncertain, Lucas Perri is attracting interest from AC Milan. As a result, his return to the U.S. presents an opportunity to regain form ahead of the 2026 World Cup on home soil.

Ultimately, Matt Turner’s move to Lyon, followed by his loan to New England Revolution, is about securing consistent game time. This is crucial for maintaining his form and securing his place in the national team for the upcoming 2026 World Cup.
