Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny is set to be handed a lifeline with a chance to revive his career with a move to Ligue 1 giants Bordeaux in the upcoming summer transfer window.
Elneny arrived at the Emirates Stadium back in the summer of 2016 from Swiss club Basel for a transfer fee of close to £7 million. But the Egyptian international has failed to cement his place in Arsenal’s starting eleven over the past three years despite given the opportunity on a regular basis.
The 26-year-old midfielder has made only seven Premier League appearances for Arsenal this season and has failed to impress his Spanish boss Unai Emery. The 47-year-old manager now has to sort out his transfer targets and also raise funds for his expenses in the summer and Elneny’s sale could be beneficial for Arsenal.
More so, Elneny could revive his career at Bordeaux as recently appointed manager Paulo Sousa is preparing a bid to sign the Egyptian. The Portuguese boss has worked with Elneny in the past when the duo won quite a few honors together with Basel.
The 48-year-old former Juventus star only recently took charge of the French club in March as they are struggling in 14th place on the Ligue 1 table. Sousa has also admitted that he wants to bring in players at Bordeaux that he has worked with before in the summer to restore the club to its previous glories.
Elneny may also be tempted to join Bordeaux as his current deal with Arsenal runs out in 2022 and the defensive midfielder could be looking forward to regular football under Sousa. Bordeaux has won the Ligue 1 six times in their history, most recently, a decade ago in 2009.
