It is no secret that Arsenal are in the market for attacking reinforcements in the January window, with injury to key man Bukayo Saka forcing their hand. As per reports from John Cross of The Mirror, manager Mikel Arteta sees Athletic Club’s Nico Williams as his dream signing and would like to bring the Spaniard to the Emirates Stadium.
The 21-year-old is known for his pace, explosiveness, directness and ability to create chances out of nothing on the left flank, and has risen to prominence in the European football circuit over the last few years. He scored and assisted for Spain against Georgia in the Euro 2024 quarter-finals, and cemented his spot in history with a goal in the final against England.
The Gunners have been linked with Williams ever since the Euros ended, but the player previously expressed his desire to remain with his current club and to develop with them. However, his form with them has plummeted, as he has produced just three goals and five assists in 27 appearances so far this season.
A move to Arsenal would be a step-up for the winger, and a chance to work with Mikel Arteta could reignite his career.
Williams’ extraordinary wage demands could be a stumbling block
While there is clear interest from both Arsenal and Williams’ camp to get the deal over the line, the player’s exorbitant wage demands could prove to be a major stumbling block for the Gunners.
The Spaniard is reportedly demanding £300,000 per week to make the switch to the Emirates Stadium – a figure that would make him the top earner with the north Londoners, and then some. This demand has deterred the Gunners, who have also began exploring newer options should a deal for Williams fail to materialize.
Other Premier League clubs such as Chelsea and Liverpool are also interested so Arsenal will have to decide their stance to prevent losing out to a rival.
