Maurizio Sarri has confirmed that French World-Cup winner Olivier Giroud will stay at Chelsea despite his contract expiring at the end of this season.
Olivier Giroud came in at Stamfrod Bridge from Arsenal with Antonio Conte wanting a target man upfront, he was quick to shrug off competition from Alvaro Morata to become Chelsea’s first choice striker. Although, Maurizio Sarri brought his preferred Gonzalo Higuain this January and Olivier is just straching heads over back-up role.
Before Chelsea’s 4-3 win over Slavia Prague in he Europa League, Giroud stated that he was frustrated at not getting more playing time.
“When the boss gives me a chance to bring something else to the team, I try to give my best and I am fully committed,” he said
I have been efficient. It has worked up until now so hopefully I will get some more goals to get us to the final.
“Trust me, I am very frustrated when I am not on the pitch but I don’t want to show it.
“I am not happy to play second choice so that’s why I have said next year I will need to have a more important role.”
However, Chelsea boss Sarri confirmed that they have decided to take up the option on Oli’s contract for another year as impending transfer ban make things difficult for the Blues as well this summer.
“He is sure [to stay] because the club has an option for another year, another season,” Sarri told Sky Sports News.
“I spoke to the club two days ago and we agreed to exercise the option. So, he will remain.”
