Arsenal have taken a major step in their bid to win the Premier League title after sensationally hijacking Tottenham Hotspur’s move for Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze. The Gunners acted quickly following Kai Havertz’s knee injury, agreeing a deal worth more than £60 million to secure the England international ahead of their rivals.

Tottenham had been close to completing Eze’s signing, with advanced talks and a medical already being planned. But Arsenal’s late intervention changed the direction of the transfer, leaving Spurs empty-handed and Palace reluctantly agreeing to a blockbuster sale.

The move marks a full-circle moment for Eze, who grew up supporting Arsenal and even spent time in the club’s academy before being released at the age of 13. His journey since then has seen him shine at QPR and become a key figure at Palace, ultimately earning a dream transfer back to north London.

Eze’s technical ability, creativity, and composure in tight spaces have made him one of the most admired attackers in the Premier League. For Arsenal, he represents both quality and depth, strengthening Mikel Arteta’s squad in the middle of a crucial campaign.

Former Arsenal star Paul Merson has lauded the signing, insisting Eze could be the player to finally get Arsenal over the line in the title race. Speaking on Sky Sports, he said: “Eze is a brilliant signing for Arsenal. It’s a game-changer and a perfect fit. If Arsenal had let Spurs get him, I’d have had to question what the club was doing.”

Merson explained that Arsenal have often struggled to break down deep, compact defensive blocks in recent seasons. He believes Eze has the X-factor to unlock stubborn opponents, particularly in home matches where the Gunners dominate possession. “At home, against the lesser teams, where they have 70 to 80 per cent of the ball, let Eze go and do what he wants because he will make something happen,” he added.

Title ambitions boosted

While Merson acknowledged that Arsenal may still need different strategies against Liverpool or Manchester City, he was adamant about Eze’s potential impact. “I think Arsenal win the league with Eze,” he concluded. With Tottenham missing out and Arsenal landing a long-term admirer, the balance of power in north London may have just shifted once again.

Eze is due to complete his medical today and, once registered, could be available for Arsenal’s upcoming clash against Leeds United. His arrival adds fresh excitement to Arteta’s squad and fuels hopes of ending a two-decade wait for the Premier League trophy.
