Arsenal forward Pierre Emerick Aubameyang netted twice on the final day of the season against Burnley to tie with Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane in the race for the Golden Boot.
The three African superstars finished with 22 goals each and shared the individual award for the top scorer over the course of the season. Arsenal’s Aubameyang scored a brace in a 3-1 win against Burnley and Sadio Mane also scored two goals against Wolverhampton Wanderers to level up with Egyptian star Mohamed Salah.
However, despite topping the goalscoring charts in the Premier League, Aubameyang insisted that he is still a team player. While speaking to news outlet BBC after the win against Burnley, the 29-year-old Gabon forward said that he was happy to win the Golden Boot but he did not tell his teammates about his individual accolade, “I am happy we won, and I am sharing this [Golden Boot] trophy with two other guys I like. My team-mates knew about the Golden Boot, I said nothing. I did not want them to play and only focus on me. I am a team player. The team has had a great season but last month it has not been the best in the league.”
To be honest, its a shame Auba is sharing that golden boot after all the golden chances he missed to convert his brace into a hat-trick, which would have been his second in three days and would have won him the golden boot outright but he preferred to concentrate on Eddie Nketia’s contribution with who scored his first ever Premier League goal with the last kick of Arsenal’s Premier League campaign.
He added: “Yeah, it was near – but sometimes that can happen.
“I have to be focused on those kinds of chances, but I’m happy that we won and that I’m sharing the [Golden Boot] trophy with two other guys that I like.
“Yeah, of course [I am delighted for Eddie]. That’s good for the club, when you have young players coming into the first team and scoring. Eddie always works hard for the team, so I’m happy for him.”
Arsenal endured a rather misfortunate wobble towards the end of the season when they managed just one win in their previous five encounters which ultimately cost Unai Emery’s side a Champions League spot as they finished fifth on the Premier League table.
But the chance for securing a Champions League berth could still be completed with a win over local London rivals Chelsea in the Europa League final.
