Medicos on alert: Arsenal’s £29m offer for Gimenez signals urgent transfer push

Santiago-Gimenez-Arsenal

Edu Gaspar and Arsenal are working behind the scenes to bolster the squad on Deadline Day. With talks breaking down to bring Joan Garcia as a new goalkeeper from Espanyol, the Gunners have swiftly moved to sign Bournemouth goalkeeper Neto.

The Brazilian goalkeeper is set to undergo his medicals ahead of an impending move. Arsenal have kept the same medical team on standby, indicating that they might be expecting something to happen.

This comes on the heels of the news that Arsenal opened talks to sign Santiago Gimenez, the Mexican striker from Feyenoord last night. The 23-year-old was in advanced talks to sign for Nottingham Forest only for the move to break down in the 11th hour.

It has since emerged that Arsenal made a £29m bid for Gimenez this morning, per Arsenal Fanatics News on their Patreon. Not many updates have since emerged on the striker but the fact that the Gunners are keeping a medicos team on standby suggests something might be brewing.

For quite some time now, we have been highlighting Arsenal’s need to sign a new attacker to add some depth in those areas. Ideally, it would have been better for the Gunners to sign someone who can play in all three positions in attack.

Gimenez is not that player. He is an out-and-out striker who plays through the middle and guarantees goals for the team. His game has been moulded by the highly-rated Arne Slot who is now Liverpool’s manager.

The Mexican striker is excellent at holding up play and winning the second ball and has the experience of realising willing runners ahead of him in the attack. He could do the same at the Emirates with Martinelli and Saka flying on either side.

Having played in Slot’s intricate tactical setup, adjusting to a similar, possession-based style under Mikel Arteta shouldn’t be a world of difference. At 23, he is also not too young to make the step up to the Premier League nor is he too old to make modifications in his game.

Arteta currently uses Kai Havertz as his preferred number nine option. As much as the German has improved in recent months, having another option of a completely different profile helps when Arsenal need to compete against different oppositions in different competitions.

Should Gimenez come to the Emirates in the next few hours, Jesus could be tasked with providing depth on the wings considering he has played there before. Something big is brewing at Arsenal and all we can do is wait and watching it play out in the hours to come.
