Should Leandro Trossard start over Gabriel Martinelli?

Trossard-Arsenal

The debate over whether Leandro Trossard should start over Gabriel Martinelli has gained traction, especially considering the contrasting performances of the two players over the past year. Martinelli, once an integral member of the team, has seen a dip in form, while Trossard has impressed with his contributions off the bench.

Martinelli burst onto the scene as one of Arsenal’s most exciting young talents. His directness, pace, and ability to take on defenders made him a key player for the Gunners. During the 2022-23 Premier League season, Martinelli was in scintillating form, scoring 15 goals and establishing himself as a vital cog in Arsenal’s attack.

However, the 23-year-old’s form took a dip last season. Despite taking more shots per 90 minutes (2.59) compared to the previous season (2.55), Martinelli’s goal tally dropped to just six. He underperformed his xG of 6.8 by 0.8, a significant drop from the 9.1 xG he recorded the previous year. This suggests that Martinelli failed to get himself in good positions, unable to craft good goal scoring opportunities for himself.

In contrast, Trossard has shown that he deserves to start. The Belgian forward, who joined Arsenal from Brighton, has been consistently effective when called upon. Trossard’s ability to make an immediate impact was on full display in Arsenal’s recent 2-0 win over Aston Villa. Coming off the bench with the scores locked at 0-0, Trossard scored with his first touch within minutes of his introduction.

The Belgian is arguably Arsenal’s best finisher, and his numbers back that up. Last season, he scored 12 goals in just 18 starts, overperforming his xG by a massive 4.1. What Arsenal need now are decisive players. The team has enough dribblers and creators in Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard and Kai Havertz. They need a finisher like Trossard to convert those half-chances.

Mikel Arteta should give Trossard a run of games. Having him in the team gives Arsenal that clinical edge they so desperately need in their title fight with Manchester City and potentially Liverpool. With Martinelli coming off the bench, Arsenal would also benefit from the added pace and direct play towards the end of the game, with the winger taking advantage of the defenders’ tired legs. Reversing their roles should be strongly considered by the Gunners’ management as they chase their first Premier League trophy in over 20 years.
