Arsenal manager Unai Emery has confirmed that Granit Xhaka has been stripped off captaincy following his extraordinary fall-out with large section of Arsenal supporters against Crystal Palace at the Emirates Stadium couple of weeks back.
Arsenal ace Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been appointed as the new captain, and it just clouds over Xhaka’s future at Arsenal beyond January.
Although Emery didn’t offer any specific reason for the decision to get Xhaka off that armband and there is no doubt that the situation became untenable.
“I had a meeting with him and told him he is no longer in the captain’s group,” Emery explained, per the Mirror.
“He accepted my decision. We need to carry on and focus on tomorrow’s match.
“I needed to take a decision and now it’s closed.”
Another of Arsenal’s cap Hector Bellerin assured Xhaka will receive full support from the dressing room.
“As I commented after the night of the game sometimes it’s hard to deal with feelings,” he said, per football.london.
“He made a mistake. As a dressing room we have to be together. We back him. He has played his part.
“We respect the decision of the coach and the club. For us it’s to give him our love and care.”
