Arsenal star midfielder Mesut Ozil may play a key role in bringing highly rated Ajax teenager Matthijs De Ligt to the Emirates in the summer.
Arsenal currently sit fifth in the Premier League ladder and are well in hunt for the top four, in order to qualify for Champions League football next season. However, Ozil has not played any league football (except 75 minutes against Cardiff City in late January) for Arsenal this year despite being reportedly fit. He did star in Arsenal’s home win against BATE in the Europa League yesterday.
The 30-year-old quit playing for his national team pretty controversially last year even after guiding Germany to the FIFA World Cup back in 2014. A move away from North London was on the cards in the winter transfer window but Arsenal is now stuck with Ozil who is on a very high wage rate and costing his club a fortune just to remain at the club.
According to Gunner’s boss Unai Emery, Ozil is not in the squad due to ‘tactical reasons’ but at £350,000 a week, the gifted playmaker should at least be an option on the bench because of his talents. This Ozil situation could also hamper Arsenal’s summer transfer policy as well.
Arsenal are keen on signing Ajax defender Matthijs De Ligt in the summer but face a massive task on their hands. The 19-year-old star defender has been wanted by a list of top elite clubs in the European continent including Barcelona, Manchester City and Juventus.
But there is no way that Arsenal can afford to bring De Ligt to the Emirates Stadium in the summer unless they organize their issue with Ozil. De Ligt is valued at around £70 million at the moment and Arsenal stated that they could only afford player on loan in January, So can they really splash that much in the summer?
In a normal scenario, if Arsenal is to get rid of Ozil in the summer for a big money move, a situation could arise where this equation could favor Arsenal to become favorites to sign Dutch sensation De Ligt.
