Arsenal are reportedly showing interest in signing Boca Juniors’ midfield prodigy Ezequiel Fernandez. The 21-year-old defensive midfielder, currently representing Argentina in the Paris Olympics, is also attracting interest from clubs like Liverpool, Inter Milan, Porto, and Marseille. Fernandez, who shares the same surname as Enzo Fernandez, has a similar playing style to the Chelsea midfielder.
Arsenal Plot Midfield Makeover with Ezequiel Fernandez
The Gunners are in the process of a midfield clear-out. Albert Sambi Lokonga has already departed for Sevilla, while Thomas Partey, Fabio Vieira, and Emile Smith Rowe are heavily linked with exits. Mikel Arteta has transitioned Arsenal’s transfer policy to signing youngsters who can then be developed at the club.
Fernandez came through the youth ranks of Boca Juniors before being loaned out to fellow Argentina Primera Division side Tigres for some valuable senior-level game time. The youngster impressed on loan and has now asserted himself as one of Boca Juniors’ key players.
The Argentine youth international is known for his excellent passing and control over the tempo of play. Fernandez is excellent at distributing play and is capable of delivering line-breaking through balls to his forwards. Despite his preference for dropping deep, he is not shy about taking on opponents, showcasing his dribbling abilities.
Defensively, Fernandez is competent, averaging 2.73 tackles per 90 minutes, placing him in the 85th percentile compared to other midfielders in similar leagues. His combination of defensive and playmaking skills makes him a well-rounded midfielder.
Arteta Keen on Boca Jewel
Fernandez would likely cost Arsenal around £15 million. Given the interest from other clubs, the Gunners should act fast to secure his services. Porto and Marseille have already made bids for him in the past, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Fernandez would be a good signing for Arsenal. He’s young and could be the perfect deputy for Declan Rice in the number six role. If he develops well, Fernandez could even stake a claim as a starter, allowing Rice to move up to the number eight role. His signing would align with Arteta’s strategy of building a youthful and tactically flexible squad for the future.
