Los Blancos made a confidential enquiry for Arsenal’s No.7, with an audacious proposal that included Rodrygo plus £70 million. Madrid’s hierarchy believed that kind of package could tempt the Gunners, while also dangling the lure of higher wages to Saka.

However, Arsenal rejected the proposal out of hand and crucially, so did Saka. The winger immediately dismissed the idea of leaving north London, underlining his commitment to the project Mikel Arteta is building.

Even with Madrid offering improved wages, Saka had no interest in the move. The Hale End graduate’s loyalty to Arsenal once again shone through, with the player intent on continuing his development and chasing silverware with the Gunners.

Internally, Arsenal saw the approach as a backhanded compliment, recognition from Europe’s most successful club that Saka is already among the world’s elite. But their stance was emphatic: Saka is not for sale.

Fast forward, and Arsenal have now secured Saka on a fresh deal, ending Madrid’s hopes. The winger’s new contract not only strengthens Arsenal’s hand but also rewards the 24-year-old with terms fitting his status as one of the Premier League’s most important players.

For Madrid, this was a rare rejection. For Arsenal, it was another victory in keeping their crown jewel. And for Saka, it was a clear message – his heart remains at the Emirates.
