Arsenal monitor a 17-year-old Swedish midfielder who had ‘no idea’, with Man United and Roma scouts also in the stands

Mikel Arteta Arsenal Chelsea transfer relationship

Arsenal are among the top European clubs monitoring Oliver Mansson, a 17-year-old midfielder at IFK Goteborg who says he knew nothing about the Premier League interest in him.

The Gunners and Chelsea had already been linked with the Swede, and the list of admirers is growing. According to Expressen, scouts from Manchester United, Roma, Freiburg, Watford and Leicester City were all at Goteborg’s 1-1 draw with Djurgarden to watch him.

He has made 15 Allsvenskan appearances this season, which is a big number for a player his age, and he is under contract in Gothenburg until 2028.

Oliver Mansson on the Arsenal transfer talk: ‘I had no idea’

The teenager was asked about the interest after that Djurgarden game and appears to have been properly surprised. “I had no idea,” Mansson said, adding that he remains focused on the present.

He has also named Barcelona as his dream club, which is worth noting for anyone in N5 already picturing him in red and white. A dream club does not settle where a 17-year-old ends up, but it does tell you English clubs may not have this one to themselves.

When could Oliver Mansson join Arsenal?

Not in January. Mansson cannot move to England until next summer, so any club chasing him is playing a longer game, and a move this winter is off the table however well he does.

Goteborg’s position is relaxed. Outgoing football director Jesper Jansson has told Swedish media the club have had no concrete contact about the player, while leaving the door open to a record-breaking sale if the right offer arrives. No fee has been mentioned, but that is not a club in any hurry to cash in.

Why this Oliver Mansson transfer fits the Arsenal pattern

Arsenal’s name keeps coming up next to very young players from abroad at the moment. We reported on the €40m-rated Cruzeiro teenager they are monitoring earlier this week, and on their reported offer for an 18-year-old Mexican playmaker before that.

None of that means a deal is close for Mansson. Monitoring is the first step, not the last, and with five other clubs in the stands at one game alone, Arsenal are hardly ahead of the queue.

Verdict: Oliver Mansson is one to watch, not one to expect

We would file this under long-term homework. A 17-year-old with 15 league games, a contract until 2028 and a Barcelona dream will not be cheap or simple, and nothing can happen before next summer anyway.

But the fact Arsenal are watching at all makes sense, and if Goteborg really are open to a record sale, the summer could get interesting. For now, Mikel Arteta has more pressing matters at Anfield.
