Arsenal’s transfer window appears to be off to a rocky start, with several of the club’s top targets looking unlikely to sign with the Gunners. Arsenal Core had reported on Mikel Arteta‘s interest in several high-profile players — Benjamin Sesko, Joshua Zirkzee, and Martin Zubimendi. While the club’s interest in these players remains, it is becoming increasingly unlikely that any of these deals will be completed.
Benjamin Sesko and Joshua Zirkzee: Missed Opportunities for a New Striker
With Arsenal targeting a new number nine this summer, Sesko and Zirkzee were seen as the club’s main targets. Interest in 21-year-old Sesko was high, with Chelsea and Manchester United also considering him a top priority signing. Although Arsenal were said to be the favorites to secure the Slovakian striker, Sesko has put an end to all transfer rumors by signing a new contract with RB Leipzig.
The striker’s new contract will be valid till 2029, with a higher salary and possibly a release clause. “I had a good first year at RB Leipzig and am incredibly happy to be here,” Sesko said in a statement. “Team, club, city, fans—the overall package remains simply outstanding for me. The early contract extension is therefore the logical step for me.”
Zirkzee also looks unlikely to join the Gunners. Arsenal were always battling AC Milan for the Netherlands international’s signature, but it appears that the Italian club are now favorites to sign him. Journalist Fabrizio Romano has reported that Milan plan to trigger his release clause and have already been in contact with his agents. Zirkzee is said to be keen on a move to Milan.
Martin Zubimendi: Another Setback
Zubimendi also seems to be an unlikely acquisition for the Gunners. The Spaniard has expressed his desire to continue at Real Sociedad. Speaking to Marca, the midfielder stated, “I’m happy at Real Sociedad, it’s my home. I can’t say I will be here for the rest of my career because maybe in the future Real Sociedad won’t want me to continue here. I’m not bothered about those rumors.”
Looking Forward
While this is not a good start for the Gunners, the club will no doubt identify new targets that fulfill the requirements of the team. Once those targets are identified, they will be promptly covered on Arsenal Core.
