Arsenal legend and renowned football pundit Ian Wright recently shared his verdict on the untimely exit of his former club’s Sporting Director Edu Gaspar. Speaking on the Stick To Football Podcast, Wright termed the decision as ‘strange’ and questioned the timing of Edu’s decision.
Speaking on the podcast, Wright said,
“Edu leaving was a massive surprise. A bolt from the blue, in respects of where Arsenal are trying to get to and what he’s done with Mikel (Arteta) to get them there. I just find it strange that when we are getting closer to catching them (Manchester City and Liverpool), to leave now. But maybe it was one of those ultimatums.
“What I’m hoping now is we can get to the next person who can sort out our front line and sort out the forwards.”
Clearly concerned by the potential unrest at the Emirates Stadium, Ian Wright mentioned some key points that would cause concern among Arsenal fans.
Ian Wright shares opinion on timing of Edu’s departure
The former England striker expressed his surprise at the move as the Brazilian has been a key member of the hierarchy in recent seasons. Edu and the board played a key role in stabilizing Arsenal before bringing competitiveness back in the squad.
Edu led the recruitment keeping a close relationship with Mikel Arteta in regards to player transfers, with the pair developing a solid understanding in their time together. Now, with the club on the cusp of becoming one of the top sides and needing a few signings to get them there, they will have to start from scratch with a new Sporting Director.
Being one of the most free-scoring sides in England in the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons, the Gunners have lacked in that department so far in the 2024-25 season. The incoming candidate for the directorial role will be under pressure to recruit with precision and speed so as to fill the gaps in the squad.
