Arsenal have made an official proposal to land Spanish winger Nico Williams this summer as the Gunners fortify their interests in acquiring the 21-year-old winger from under Chelsea’s noses.
There is a need for a new winger at the Emirates Stadium as the club lacks depth in the right-wing role for Bukayo Saka, especially if Reiss Nelson is to depart London Colney this summer. Securing a move for a wide-forward is rising among the priorities for Mikel Arteta, especially considering the fact that Saka has played in abundance for the past two seasons and Arsenal can no longer run him to the ground.
A plethora of wingers have been linked with a move to North London, with Napoli’s Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Wolves’ Pedro Neto among those in consideration. However, the latest reports in Spain suggest that Athletic club winger is attracting most attention from Arsenal, with the Gunners ‘putting money on the table, both for the club and for the player’.
Can Arsenal afford Nico Williams despite bid?
The reports suggest that Arsenal would be willing to ‘go all out for the winger’ alongside their London neighbors Chelsea. Spanish giants Barcelona, meanwhile, are having a difficult time competing with the English clubs in terms of financial prospects. Both PL sides are willing to pay the €58 million release clause in his contract at Athletic Bilbao.
Chelsea are willing to offer a hefty salary of 15 million euros, which is three times as much as the 21-year-old’s current salary.
You would expect Arsenal to not do anything stupid with their balanced salary structure to land Williams. While the release clause in his contract looks very appealing for a player of his magnitude, release clauses in Spanish football need to be paid in one go, which makes it more complicated for the Gunners to consider signing him this summer.
Nico Williams is a talent with high potential, yet he is still too inexperienced and unproven for Arsenal to take such financial risks to land him.
