Arsenal reject the chance to sign Jadon Sancho

Sancho-Arsenal

Arsenal have reportedly rejected the opportunity to sign Jadon Sancho after the winger was offered to them by Manchester United. The Red Devils are reportedly looking to sell the 24-year-old this summer after Sancho fell out with United boss Erik Ten Hag last season.

Sancho was offered to the Gunners for £40 million, but Arsenal declined after considering his £250,000-a-week wages and recent Premier League form. The former England international was also reportedly offered to Chelsea and his former club Manchester City, who similarly passed on the opportunity.

After coming up the youth ranks of Watford and Man City, Sancho left England for Borussia Dortmund. The Bundesliga giants signed him for a reported fee of £8 million as they promised him regular game time, something which the Citizens failed to do. The winger shined in Germany, scoring 40 goals and assisting a further 47 in 118 appearances.

This stellar record convinced Man Utd to go big for the 24-year-old, with the Red Devils securing him for £75 million in the summer of 2021. However, Sancho has failed to live up to expectations, scoring just nine goals and assisting six in 58 appearances. After falling out with manager Ten Hag, the winger was loaned out back to Dortmund, where he showed some signs of his former self.

While Sancho’s talent is undeniable, Arsenal’s decision not to sign him appears practical. The Gunners are seeking a right winger to deputize for Bukayo Saka, but Sancho is unlikely to be content as a rotation player. Moreover, his hefty wages are impractical for a non-regular starter. Mikel Arteta is expected to explore other, more affordable options for the right wing position.

Arsenal are primarily looking for a striker this summer, willing to spend big on an elite forward who can fire them to a first Premier League title in over 20 years.
