Arsenal’s top left-wing target, Nico Williams, has dropped a surprising and a rather not-so-convincing update ahead of the summer transfer window.

The 22-year-old has been high on the Gunner’s wish list for the past few years, and in fact, they came close to signing him after his impressive performances at the Euros 2024. However, the move failed to materialise, and the player later stated that he is happy to stay at the Spanish club.

He is once again making the headlines, with several high-profile teams keeping an eye on his situation at San Mamés. It is said that Arsenal have jumped ahead of their closest competitor, Barcelona, in this transfer race.

Arsenal want to finalise Nico Williams agreement

William’s low transfer clause of just €58 million (£48.4m) makes him a bargain superstar signing. Although the left-winger suffered injury setbacks earlier in the season, he has still scored 11 goals and provided seven assists in all competitions for Athletic Bilbao.

The talented ace has now dropped a huge hint ahead of his parent club’s Europa League semi-final tie against Manchester United. It is a vital game for them since a win will not only book their spot in the finals but also give them a chance to lift the prestigious trophy at their home ground, San Mames.

Williams scored a decisive goal in Bilbao’s 2-0 aggregate win over Rangers in the quarter finals, and the club is banking on him to help win their first ever European title.

Speaking to Spanish outlet AS, the talented player emphasised his plans to make history with his boyhood club and even compete for the Champions League title next season.

He said:

Every kid wants to play at Old Trafford. We have the goal of winning the Europa League and, next year, to crush the Champions League. Little by little.”

“I think our motto of going ‘on the down low’ is the best. We’re doing very well, and we need to continue like this to reach the final and continue this streak to help the team. The team is extraordinary.”

“We’re going to celebrate this victory. San Mamés deserves it more than anyone. We’re doing very well to reach the semi-final we want. One more step before the final, and hopefully we can get there.”

The Gunners will be desperate

The young Spanish star is fully committed to winning major honours for Bilbao, and it doesn’t seem that he has set his eyes on an immediate move this summer. However, his low release clause hints that the final decision will also stay with the club.

The player might be lured to move to Arsenal if they are ready to meet their asking price and convince Williams about his bright future projects.

The North London outfit are aware that other clubs like Chelsea and Bayern Munich are also interested in their top target. Manager Mikel Arteta is desperate to improve his squad in the upcoming months, and we expect quality additions to his front line.

They are most likely to strengthen their striker and wide-attacker positions before planning other transfers. Arsenal’s new sporting director Andrea Berta is believed to have held talks with the Bilbao ace’s representatives, and things might become clearer once the season ends.
