Arsenal recall winger from loan spell following Bukayo Saka injury

Charles-Sagoe-Jr

Arsenal have recalled highly-rated winger Charles Sagoe Jr. from Shrewsbury Town by cutting his season-long loan deal short in the wake of a long-term hamstring injury for Bukayo Saka. The League One outfit confirmed the termination of the deal via their media channels, putting an end to a five-month loan spell for the 20-year-old.

Shrewsbury released a statement to thank Charles Sagoe Jr. via their social media on Monday, January 6, saying,

“Shrewsbury would like to thank Charles for all his hard work over the past five months.”

Sagoe Jr. joined Shrewsbury on a season-long loan under their former manager Paul Hurst, who has since been relieved of his duties at the club. His departure has coincided with a lack of playing time for the player, as new manager Gareth Ainsworth has not given Sagoe Jr. enough playing time. He has made just three appearances under Ainsworth, which could also be a factor for him being recalled.

The Hale End graduate made 18 appearances for Shrewsbury Town during his loan spell, but was unable to establish himself as a first-team regular at the club. The club are currently struggling at 22nd in League One, making it harder for younger players to be given minutes.

The winger came through the youth ranks at Fulham, before joining Arsenal’s Hale End academy in 2015, where he represented them at various levels until 2023. He made 80 appearances for the U18s, U19s and U21s, and was also handed his first team debut in the EFL Cup.

He spent last season on loan at Swansea City but made just two appearances for them, resulting in a new destination for his development this season. However, the Gunners have deemed his current progress as unacceptable and have recalled the player, with the next decision about his future and possible involvement with the first team yet to be made.
