Turkish giants Besiktas are reportedly eyeing Arsenal midfielder Jorginho as a potential signing.
According to Turkish outlet Sabah, Besiktas are closely monitoring Jorginho’s contract situation at Arsenal with the club, hoping to sign him on a free transfer. The Super Lig side is looking to bolster their midfield and sees the experienced Italian international as a valuable addition to their squad.
The Italian midfielder’s current deal expires in June 2025, with clubs allowed to start negotiations over a free transfer in January, when there are six months on the existing deal. However, Arsenal and mainly Mikel Arteta’s stance on the move is likely to be firmly in opposition, with Jorginho being a key member of the first team.
Despite featuring sparingly in games for the Gunners, Jorginho remains one of Arteta’s trusted players. His experience at the top level is invaluable for the young group as well.
Jorginho’s presence is invaluable for a young Arsenal team
Despite not becoming a regular in the Arsenal first team, Jorginho has been a key presence in the dressing room. A former Champions League and Euro winner, the 32-year-old is an important personality in a team with an average age of around 25 years.
Since joining the Gunners back in 2023, the Italian midfielder has played 3,038 minutes across 59 appearances, scoring one goal and providing three assists as well. Nearing the twilight years of his career, a move to a lesser demanding league could benefit the player.
However, with the importance he carries for the team, they will be unwilling to let him leave on a free transfer. In this case, however, they will have to renew his contract before January to prevent Besiktas from agreeing a pre-contract with the player’s camp.
Considering the list of injuries and lack of depth in the squad this season, Arsenal would be unwilling to let their player leave in January.
