Arsenal have been looking at options to bolster the squad for some time now. They have made two signings so far this summer – Riccardo Calafiori and Mikel Merino. That’s one defensive and one midfield reinforcement.
Understandably, the Gunners need to look at an attacker next. With Eddie Nketiah on his way to Crystal Palace and Reiss Nelson still a possible exit in the 48-odd hours left, Mikel Arteta could do with another attacker in his squad.
Arsenal were heavily linked with a move for Benjamin Sesko early in the transfer window but the striker signed a new deal with RB Leipzig, effectively shutting down the door. There were also talks of Viktor Gyokeres that never developed into something significant.
Over the past 48 hours, there has been speculation that Arsenal could make a big move for Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez, looking to take advantage of his situation at the club currently.
Nunez has failed to start Arne Slot’s first two games in charge of the club and has hardly received minutes. He was an unused substitute in the first game and played less than half an hour in the second. This has led to speculation that Slot might not be counting on the 25-year-old.
Just ‘agent driven’; nothing else!
Calm down Arsenal fans, there is absolutely no truth to these rumours. This is just a desperate attempt from Darwin Nunez’s agents to drum up interest in their client and put pressure on Liverpool to give him a more prominent role.
The ex-Benfica man has had a weird couple of seasons at Anfield. His raw potential is there for everyone to see but often, in the big moments, Nunez has gone missing. His finishing has left a lot to be desired and he tends to switch off during games.

What Nunez needs is a building project where he can grow along with the team. Arsenal are way beyond the stage of a building project and are now on the verge of becoming a winning one. The last thing the Gunners need right now is a player who needs hand-holding.
Make no mistake, Mikel Arteta is excellent at working with players who have had underwhelming pasts. The Spanish tactician completely transformed Kai Havertz’s career at Emirates and the German looks like a different player these days.
Arsenal and Nunez are a mismatch. It’s like pairing fish fingers with custards. It just doesn’t sit right. Maybe two-three years down the line, the Uruguayan would have developed into a complete striker and might be an option for the Gunners.

Right now, as mentioned earlier, there is no truth to these rumours. Darwin Nunez is not coming to the Emirates except on 27th October when Liverpool visit us in the Premier League. It’s time to put a bed to these baseless claims, once and for all.
