The start of this Premier League season has not been pleasing for the North Londoners with both their elite clubs performing way below par. Both the North London jerseys have been dismal in defence as their process to bolster it in June seems unfruitful.
Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur both are deeply in need of a quality centre-back as their respective defenders keep on ageing. Not more than a year of football is left in either Sokratis or David Luiz while the likes of Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertongen don’t look like staying.
There’s one solution to both these teams problem that lies in Dayot Upamecano, the RB Leipzig defender whom Arsenal tried to squeeze in summer window but were given aback with his transfer clause. Back then, the defender had a mammoth £92million release clause.
Arsenal had to put away the offer for such a huge sum but it seems that the transfer fees of Dayot Upamecano may fall considerably if the defender does not renew the contract with RB Leipzig.
The 21-year-old’s transfer fee will fall heavily until next summer if he does not renew his contract and the signs of a breakthrough are not at all evident. The Frenchman is out of contract in 2021 and with only an year of contract with Leipzig his release clause would fall drastically around a region of €60 million.
And according to Sun, a bid of £40 million will be more than enough to snoop the defender from the French club. The fall in price hence raises the chances of Tottentham Hotspur fighting for the defender and even chasing him first.
The defender is no more a target of Arsenal but also their neighbours and both the teams would therefore make it their will to sign the defender before their arch-rivals are successful in doing so.
Indeed, a tough competition between the teams lacking defensive acumen and mentality.
