Former Liverpool and England great Jamie Carragher has given his two cents on Arsenal’s recruitment strategy and how it can impact their chances of lifting the Premier League after over 20 years.
Speaking during a game of ‘Transfer or No Transfer’ on Sky Sports, Carragher was crystal-clear in his response, when asked if the Gunners should sign Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig for £60m. He said: “Deal! They need to sign a centre-forward, otherwise they won’t win the Premier League.”
Carragher’s words carry a whole lot of weight and this was proven when Manchester City signed Erling Haaland and have won two league titles with the Norwegian leading the line. Sesko, who has been compared to Erling Haaland several times, himself acknowledged the comparison during a recent interview. He mentioned he is aware of the comparisons but stood his ground and reiterated he wants to be his own player. He said,
“I already said that I’m my own player. The only thing that we have kind of similar is, of course, height. And also, we’re both fast but in general, we have a different style of playing.”
Sesko is a key player for RB Leipzig and with the team still competitive this season, it is unlikely they would allow a move mid-season.
Benjamin Sesko’s importance to RB Leipzig
Despite not really challenging for the Bundesliga title, Leipzig are a team that’s always in the mix at the top, and are also regular attendees in the UEFA Champions League. Currently, manager Marco Rose prefers using two attackers up front, and has forged an incredible partnership between Benjamin Sesko and Lois Openda.
The Belgian has also widely been scouted by Arsenal and remains a target. Standing at just under six feet, he does everything Sesko cannot do so well, while the Slovenian does vice-versa. Sesko has produced 14 goals and three assists in 27 appearances for Leipzig this season. The striker pairing have played 58 games together and been involved in seven goals together.

Sesko’s tall, strong and highly-athletic frame helps them maintain an aerial threat while predominantly looking to play along the ground, which is something he is good at too. With the pace at which Arsenal play at, Sesko would fit in like a hand in a glove.
