Not much was known of him when Arsenal announced the signing of 19-year-old Matteo Guendouzi from Lorient. Guendouzi is another of findings of World famous – Sven Mislintat (Arsenal’s head of recruitment). All that was known about the player at the time was that:
- He was a part of PSG’s academy before signing up with Lorient’s academy in 2014
- He made his debut for Lorient’s first team in October 2016 when he was only seventeen.
- Matteo has represented France at under-18, under-19 and under-20 level.
But here we are, talking about him and comparing him with the likes of Michael Carrick and Paul Pogba just weeks after his arrival.
At nineteen, he is one for the future though inheritance of Xhaka’s Number 29 signifies ‘He is in Unai Emery’s plan for some first team outings.‘ Matteo is expected to be an integral part of youth setup complemented with significant amount of first team outings in Europea League, FA Cup and League Cup.
Guendouzi’s performance in the preseason have forced Gunners to lay their eyes on him.
In its review of match against PSG, Guendouzi was named Daily Mirror’s Man of the Match. The paper described his performance against PSG as follows:
“The Frenchman might be the recruit of the summer. He possesses an unbelievable passing ability, with positional sense to cut out any danger. If you squinted and ignored the flowing locks, you could be duped into thinking you were watching 2008-era Xavi.”
His confidence and ability with the ball is something everyone are talking about.
Here are some of the reactions from fans who have taken notice of Guendouzi’s skills:
I know it’s early to say, but I’m starting to think Guendouzi should start over Xhaka. His composure and vision are amazing considering his age. pic.twitter.com/vXQCIi69O9

Guendouzi reminds me of Rosicky, insofar as his first touch and movement almost always is a move forward. Will improve our momentum and pace of our game. I am looking farward to seeing him in person tomorrow night

Guendouzi is definitely ready for first team football. Apart from the fact that he is a great passer, I like how quickly he releases the ball. I have never ever been this impressed by a youngster in pre-season. This guy is a special, special talent. Huge credit to Sven Mislintat.

Guendouzi reminds me of Patrick Vieira. Early days but if he continues progressing, can see him starting for Arsenal by season end.
Guendouzi, Niles and Torreira all under 23. Future is indeed bright.— P™ (@Cechque) July 28, 2018
Mattéo Guendouzi really seems like a steal. His understanding of the game at such a young age is really promising. Hopefully he’ll get a lot of game-time this season. #afc pic.twitter.com/22RzwL42tr

Isn’t it crazy that this time last month none of us know who Mattéo Guendouzi was, but now we’re all fully aware that he’s better than prime Zidane and a is future Ballon d’Or winner? Football is mad.
