Arsenal are keen to splash the cash on Thomas Lemar as Mikel Arteta eyes a few transfer in January window. The Gunners boss is keen on signing the French international as he looks to strengthen the wings.
The air of uncertainty revolving around Aubameyang’s future at Arsenal and the absence of an experienced winger at bench has led to increased interest in Atletico Madrid’s winger who was once chased in 2017 by Arsene Wenger but a change in management led to no deal.
Lemar although has become Arteta’s top target in the winter window but for me he is a double-edged sword; a risk that Arsenal should not take. The Gunners have a plethora of talent on the bench albeit young who just need proper guidance and game time to develop into a senior level player.
Getting Thomas Lemar could be a risky business in a lot of ways. The Frenchman without any doubt is presently one of the most talked about and talented winger but with a level of consistency similar to that of an amateur.
The 24-year-old has not been a regular for Diego Simeone’s squad and has struggled for the Madrid squad ever since he has joined the club. The winger has been finding it difficult to get the ball past opposition’s goalkeeper or produce an assist.
Since 2018, Lemar has played only 40 games for the club and has been able to score a mere 3 goals for the jersey. Surely a shadow of what he was in 2017 for Monaco where we could see him dribbling past the defenders from either wings and producing a few game changing moments.
The Frenchman hasn’t been able to develop his game and adapt to life at Spain under Simeone. And the youngster is often plagued with injury which keeps him out for a period. Something Arsenal would not want from a player they would spend huge sum on.
Thomas Lemar with all his skills and talent is a perfect match for Arsenal but a risk with negative returns. The Frenchman will find it difficult to adopt to the English conditions and make an impact at Emirates. Therefore, Arteta should not spend profoundly on him and rather try and bring in an experienced defender.
